Embracing the Energy of Autumn
As we enter the season of Autumn, we might start to sense the slowing down of growth. This is the season of endings and letting go. It’s a season of release marked by the shift into a negative flow.
According to Chinese Medicine Autumn marks the beginning of the yin cycle of the year. Here we reap what we have sowed. It’s a time of harvest, a time for gathering and storing.
According to Ayurveda, in Autumn everyone is more susceptible to a Vata imbalance. Signs of excess, imbalanced Vata energy can manifest as:
- Anxiety
- Inability to focus or commit to goals and plans.
- Lack of motivation.
- Insomnia or poor sleep
- Digestive upset such as bloating.
- Dry skin, hair, and nails
- Weight issues
Work and Goals
The season of autumn can be associated with the element of Metal, which governs organisation, order, limits, and boundaries.
This is a good time to finish off the projects you began in spring, harvesting the bounty of your hard work. You may find it difficult to commit to following through on goals at this time or feel unmotivated. This is a great time to engage a coach or therapist whom you can be accountable to, to help you bring your goals to completion.
You may find a need to focus on the more yin aspect of planning which includes considering how you want to feel as you move forward with your life.
Prepare yourself for winter by structuring or making any changes to your work life so that there is balance and harmony between your work life and your personal goals. Minimise those tasks which drain your energy or which do not bring joy in your life.
Lifestyle
Sleep is an essential aspect of staying healthy in Autumn. Retire early at night, noticie the sun setting earlier with each day that passes and aim to rise with the rising of the sun to help your body transition.
Practice exercises and meditations that bring you into a state of tranquillity.
Hatha Yoga is a great practice to engage in now to stabilise and bring structure to the body. Yin Yoga and stretching will help you to prevent hardening and help with the onset of joint stiffness the cold can bring.
Get a seasonal tune-up from your energy therapist or kinesiologist to help you transition into the seasonal shift when your energy body is quite vulnerable.
Diet
During early Autumn eat plenty of fresh, late-summer harvested fruits such as fresh apples and pears. These fruits also provide plenty of fibre, to eliminate waste, preparing the gut to digest the heavier foods of winter.
Strengthen your energy and prepare for winter, strengthen your defenses by boosting your immune system with Vitamin C, Zinc and immune-boosting herbs such as Astragalus and Echinacea.
Try not to eat excess cold and raw foods or too many dairy products which have a cooling effect on the body.
Pungent foods like garlic, onions, ginger, horseradish, and mustard can be beneficial at this time.
People around the world have celebrated autumn with fasting rituals such as Ramadan and Yom Kippur. It is a traditional time to focus on balancing the body. You might like to try seasonal water fast for 18 – 24 hours to detoxify the system in preparation for the colder months.
